Many years ago, I found a paperback book in a pile of newspapers &
magazines whilst cleaning up after a tornado. An impressionable 9th
grader who'd just bought his 1st Dylan album (JWH) spied his hero's
name on the book cover. I'd forgotten all about it, but it fell in
my lap the other day while I was shuffling books in the attic. A damn
sight better than what happened to fatron when he tried to retrieve
his copy of "Ten of Swords" to list with the BDBDB... Oh, well,
fasten your seat belts bibliographers; this is a wierd one.

Noebel, David A. _Rhythm,_Riots_and_Revolution_ (Tulsa OK: Christian
    Crusade Publications, 1966).

According to the back cover, the paperback was priced at $1; cloth-
bound was $3. Inside the front cover is the handwritten admonition,
"Read and pass on."



The cover features acrude sketch of a guitarist that looks enough like
Bob Dylan to get the attention of a 14 yr old afflictee who hasn't quite
realized that he has the bug & just enough *not* like Bob Dylan to avoid
any obvious lawsuits. The drawing features pronounced lines on its face,
so that this "portrait" done in the year of Dylan's electrification,
almost looks like the bard of today. (Okay, you have to have a few beers,
but if you squint...)

Come on out the dark is beginning...the title page is revealing:

Among several quotes on the cover is this gem, which proves that
Craig comes by it natural:

    "I want my woman dirty, looking as though I'd just
     found her in some alley ... It triggers the animal
     emotion..."

The book (which I have read because the actual text is very short)
is froth-mouthed polemic of the dying-McCarthyism school. It's
generally directed at the folkies of the 50s & early 60s: the
Almanac Singers/Seeger/W.E.B. DuBois Club "fifth amendment patriots."
Bob Dylan is referenced 16 times in the index. There's a chapter
titled "Prince of Rock'n'Folk" & another is "'Eve of Destruction'
and 'Like a Rolling Stone'."

Here's a particularly fine bit of phrasing for an event that most
will remember:

    "For Dylan's usefulness to the Communist Party and his
     open & defiant attitude toward anti-Communism, the
     Communist front, Emergency Civil Liberties Committee,
     presented Dylan with its Tom Paine Award..." (p 220)

The author is described as pastor & dean of the Christian Crusade
Anti-Communist Youth University. (I am NOT making this up...) He is
described on the front cover as "author of the best seller "Communism,
Hypnotism & the Beatles." There's a note that he was also an
"associate member of the Southwestern Philosophical Society." Might
there be any EDLISians familiar with that organization, DanB?

Almost a third of the book itself is composed of reproductions of
reports by such groups as the California Senate Fact-Finding Committee
on Un-American Activities & U.S. House Committee on Un-American
Activities. Looks like every piece of correspondence the guy got is
in there, too. He musta had one of those secret membership cards.

"So, I ran down most hurriedly & joined the John Birch Society..."
